The Siege of Abythos by Phil Tucker
5.0
4.5 stars, actually, because there were moments where the series lost its smooth and streamline quality, got bogged down in too many side-quests and became about 200 pages too long. But the convergence at the end and the battles and the tension more than made up for the somewhat less than exciting 2/3 of the book.
The author decided to split the story into 6 different plots for his 6 PoVs. All well and good, except some of the side quests didn't engage me at all (Tiron, the Virtue training/tournament montage, etc). And there were also 4-5 new characters introduced for each separate PoV/plotline which felt to me like needless stuffing and paddning of an otherwise fast paced and plot-driven story.
Still, it all came together beautifully and I can't wait to see what happens next, because book 3 ends on two huge turning points. And the worldbuilding continues to amaze me, I'm in love with so many concepts and locations in this book. The magic-nerd in me wants to know everything about the actual magic in this world and I'm looking forward to seeing it all so slowly and deliciously revealed.
Also, Audsley is on the cover of book 4. He's by FAR my favorite character in this series and the one who's had the greatest amount of development. It's going to be a treat, to read what he does next.
