This book is couched in longing for a world that has passed away. The writer, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa is the last prince of the island of Lampedusa and a member of Italian aristocracy that has lost relevance, power and wealth in the First World War. He is writing the book Il Gattopardo (the leopard) before he dies. It is melancholy, and somehow hopeful.
