Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas

3.5

The writing and relationships from Sarah J Maas are, as always, enthralling. I love that she always keeps you guessing about who will end up with who, and why little scenes were thrown in for seemingly no reason.

My biggest gripes about this book were:
- Everything just seemed to work out. Sure there were intricate plans and such, but ultimately they just mucked around with them last minute because why not
- Lysandra's big scene
where she murdered Arobynn
could have happened at any time. She slept beside him so often. And I get that it was conveniently timed for Aelin, but it seemed so anticlimatic.
- The power of the characters seemed to be dependent on how exciting it would be for them to be weak. Aelin alone? Able to kill valgs like nothing. Rowan AND Aedion AND Lorcan? Struggling to kill Valgs. But suddenly
Lysandra gets her shifting powers and she's able to clear what these three struggled with?
Similarly, the "I have no power left" then "Whoops, destroyed all of this" happened too frequently as well.
- Not all plots are equal. I found myself bored reading some of the chapters, just waiting to get back. I also hated that I was kept with cliffhangers within the same book until I got back to plots.
