Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb

“Heroes shouldn’t be stupid for the villain to be smart”

This was the exact quote going through my mind reading this book. Everyone, from Fitz to Chade to Molly were so stupid, even Verity! Regal is cartoonishly evil and yet everyone did nothing about it, but spent the entire book complaining about it? That made so sense and using “we’re doing this for the king” was extremely flimsy. Every decision Fitz made from the beginning of the book to the end kept getting dumber and dumber. By the end I did not care. I literally said out loud, "good you deserve it! You deserve every bad thing happening to you because you're dumb!" I even thought you know, Regal is an idiot, but these people are even stupider than he is, let him be king cause no one else is going to stop him. Fuck the king, by the way, I don’t care about Shrewd. The More Fitz kept calling himself a Kingsman, the angrier I got.

I don’t know what happened from the first book, but it went downhill so fast. This is 679 pages. 679 pages too long. Almost 500 of it was just filler and served no purpose to the plot. It was long, it was frustrating, and I did not enjoy it. I’m really saddened because I really liked the first one and I was hoping that energy would be in the second book since Fitz is older, but that did not transfer at all. Fitz spends the majority of this book whining, complaining, doing literally nothing, and then crying more about it. You’re a trained assassin, Chade is an assassin, but no one can do anything to stop Regal? I find that hard to believe.

Unfortunately I don’t recommend this book.
