The Unfortunates by Kim Liggett

dark tense fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
I really don't like horror for SO MANY reasons, but this was very readable in a page-turner way. A solid survival/horror mash-up for kids who want something scary. I really liked that there's a fat boy character who has some very cute romantic moments with his petite girlfriend, and the other characters treat him with affection and support. It doesn't seem like that should be so revolutionary, AND YET. Anyway, my deeply spoilery dissatisfaction with the story that won't matter for most teens, probs:
I still didn't like reading this because I hate liking characters who then all die omg. At first I thought it was falling into the bury your gays trope, but then they all died, and then there was the reveal that they were ALWAYS dead and I was like: ugh why. Stupid book making me care about dead people. I probably should have figured out the twist earlier, but I was thinking that the kids were relatives of the accident victims, doh
