Definitely feels like reading the OG John Green book. Every YA coming of age book by white
male writers stand on the shoulders of this one. It is teenager depression at its best and it explores the inside of a misunderstood brain in NYC in the 50s (which was lovely to see through the characters eyes btw).
I definitely loved the sarcastic and cynical tone in the writing. It made me laugh so much, because of how much I could link his darkness with the kind of I WANT TO KILL MYSELF humor there is in the genz generation to this day.
A very nice read for anybody who is interested in literature and its history, since it was so genre defining.
