Barry Lyndon by William Makepeace Thackeray

3.0

While this novel begins as a funny portrayal of liar and fraud, it quickly becomes tedious as we begin to understand the pattern of Redmond's schemes. In fact, I get the feeling that Thackeray may have wanted to write a longer work, but realized that he had taken the joke about as far as he could go with the material he had. Thackeray targets everything from aristocratic social institutions to the military--almost like an English version of Candide, but not as philosophical, funny, or memorable.
