Mythical Beast Investigator Vol. 1 by Koichiro Hoshino

4.0

I have a soft spot for manga involving mythical beasts. How to Treat Magical Beasts is a favorite manga series of mine, so this seemed right up my alley. Ferry and her...bodyguard/caretaker(?) Kushuna are tasked with fielding requests and smoothing ruffled feathers (hehehe) between humans and the many magical creatures in the world. The story being told in this first volume is very episodic, with each chapter mostly self-contained stories. I enjoyed the Basilisk and the Mermaid stories the best, but they each have their charms.

The art was decent, maybe not exceptional or memorable, but also not awful either. I enjoyed the portrayal of Kushuna and the hints of him being more than he seems. I, too, would love a killer black rabbit spirit thing in a top hat following me around to make sure I don't trip or die.

I'll definitely continue with this series, and I look forward to reading volume 2!
