Five on a Secret Trail by Enid Blyton

4.0

At this stage in the series, the five have become self-aware and are describing themselves as The Famous Five and joking about an adventure being about to fall on their heads.

It's kind of hilarious.

Blyton keeps injuring Timmy as a plot device, it's sad, but it's so clear that nothing will ever happen to him that I can't get that worried.

This one didn't have Romans but did have Roman ruins and had amusing Scooby Doo style weirdness.
