Max made me sooooo mad because his characterization was so spot on. He really truly loves Olivia, but he is approaching life from such a privileged position that he can't even SEE how he is actively harming her with his actions. Over and over he proved that white men cannot be relied upon to protect black women. It was her friends who showed how to stand with, fight for, and support her. I wanted to see more examples of him actually walking the talk to protect and support her before she forgave him, but I think the resolution was nice. The third act break up (a trope that doesn't usually get high marks from me) felt real and necessary, given how severely he was messing up.
