Harry's Midnight Adventure by Catherine Campbell

Harry’s Midnight Adventure is a lovely, cat-based children’s adventure story, in which the titular cat gets unfairly locked out at night and must face the many dangers and challenges of the nocturnal neighbourhood whilst battling to return to his beloved Jessica’s cosy bed.
Harry is an endearing main character, a bit of a scaredy-cat, but willing to make an effort for his loved ones. Personally myself and Mr Shine both favoured the accident-prone, greedy Fluffy, and Minishine predictably championed tough female feline Cleo. So there is something for everyone in this book. Even Babybows who always has to be that bit different…
Minishine: I really liked this. But some of the dogs and cats are really mean! I love the main ones, especially Cleo because she is the hero really, isn’t she?! Although Harry was brave too. A bit brave. Well, not THAT brave really!2018-11-07 18.45.45
Babybows: I like ALL the cats! And the dog!
Minishine: But…the dog? The dog was a baddie!
Babybows, pugnaciously: I like dogs.
Minishine: But…he was mean to the cats!
Babybows, dismissively: I not a cat.
[long silence]
Minishine: I do like a happy ending. I was sad when he was missing his little girl. I am going to tell my friends to read this too because it’s all about animals and they like animals, and I think they [her besties] are getting cats too. Are there going to be more stories about Cleo. And Harry and Fluffy?
Yes! – this is the first in The Bad Cat Club series!
Mr Shine and I both enjoyed the story too as it was well-written and easy to read, and the plot was clear for the children to follow. It reminded us both of the old Heathcliff and The Catillac Cats cartoons that we watched as children, except less far-fetched and more rooted in genuine feline behaviours!
Definitely recommended as a bedtime story chapter book for younger readers, or a read-alone book for those 6+ who like their adventures animal-centric.
Harry’s fur started to tingle in the way it did when he felt anxious. ‘Th-the Crooked Lane C-C-Cats?’ he stammered. ‘They come round here?’ He had heard of the Crooked Lane Cats – a band of rough, tough outdoor cats who liked to prey on strays in the dark. They were led by the fearsome One-Eyed Pud, who was as big as a dog and twice as mean. Harry glanced around furtively, half expecting to see a gang of cats peering out at him.
‘They don’t usually come this far up the close,’ said Cleo. A frown crossed her face. ‘But they’re getting bolder – and your house is right on the edge of their territory.’
