The Assassin of Grins and Secrets by K.E. Andrews

Did not finish book. Stopped at 72%.
This does a lot of stuff really well. The characters are interesting and very three dimensional with complex motivations and backgrounds, and the world they inhabit is very full and detailed. The synesthesia aspect is just enough to make things unique but not too much to be overwhelming. The writing flows well and is enjoyable to read.

It's taken a me a while to figure out what was bothering me about the story: the perspective is a unique combination of third person omniscient that often shifts to first person internal thoughts of the current pov character. It shifts often, sometimes rapidly. I'm not sure I've ever encountered this before, and I'm not sure I like it. I do know it making me struggle mightily to continue, which is a shame as I really like everything else.

I might come back to finish this later. There's a lot to like here.
