The Wedding People by Alison Espach

5.0

This was just such a special book and reading experience. I went into it completely blind and it blew me away.

Espach's writing is so lovely, it's funny and quirky with so much hopefulness wrapped around the difficulties of life and existence. I fell so hard for these characters, got to know them slowly along with our main character Phoebe who is in Newport Connecticut at a fancy inn when she gets sucked into the orbit of a bride during her wedding week. The way we think we know who these people are and then have to keep reevaluating.

The love in this book felt so real to me, complicated and bittersweet. I thought it was remarkable how Espach was able to handle every single character in this book with grace even as they behave poorly, self-sabotage, make mistakes... and in the end, to me more than anything, this felt like a tribute to the power of female friendship--the way we pick each other up, fill voids, rise to meet each other, and how those bonds can be like no others in our lives.

Funny, heartwarming, touching. This book made me laugh then cry then laugh then cry and wish to just keep doing it like that with her forever.

Definitely a favourite read of the year.
