Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

5.0

Out of the trilogy, this book was my favorite. Alina and Mal both grew up and developed into fantastic characters. The plot moved at a quick pace and there was just enough of a taste of everything; adventure, romance, mystery, fantasy, and suspense. The supporting characters were amazing and their banter with Alina, Nikolai, and Mal was like a close family. Watching the journey that Alina went through and where she ended up is almost comforting somehow. I think in order for Alina to grow as much as she did, she had to lose what she did, she needed to lose that part of herself to become truly whole.

The battle with the Darkling took more from Alina that she wanted, less than she hoped, but gave her a little more than she bargained for. Alina, the pitifully small Second Army, and Mal go on a journey to help Nikolai wrestle Ravka back from the Darkling. But the end results are not without tragedy, many friends and acquaintances are lost along the way, and transformation are undergone as they all fight the darkness with light. The best hope that Nikolai, Alina, and Ravka have are for Alina to obtain all three Amplifiers and destroy the Darking and the Fold, no matter the cost.
