Normal People by Sally Rooney

4.0

I enjoyed the writing style of this book. The narrator presented the thoughts of both characters in order for us to understand their true intentions.

Essentially, this is a story about two high school nerds who explore each other sexually and then fall in love. Their poor communication results in many break ups or separations, but the characters are spiritually connected and always find a way back to each other. This is a play on Plato's other-half theory.

This book is also somewhat of a Romeo-Juliet story. Maryanne is upper class and strives to prove herself as intelligent, while Connell is lower class and is using his intelligence and athleticism to climb the social ranks. The characters are very much dependent on each other to grow and it makes me wonder if the two characters are really the same but in different points in their lives...

If you are interested in reading an extra chapter, Sally Rooney wrote a short story called "At The Clinic", which is published in The White Review. It was written before the book and is inspired by Elizabeth Bishops Poem "In the Waiting Room".

You might also notice that Frank O'Hara's poem "Having a Coke With You" inspired one of the later chapters of the book.

The communist manifesto is also explored in the book.
