Cane by Jean Toomer

2.0

Even though I didn't personally enjoy "Cane" that much, I can understand why it's counted among the classics. This book meanders. It pauses to think. Sometimes it seems to rush by too fast to understand. At once both simple and complex, this experimental writing style can be both gut-wrenching and somewhat inaccessible at times. It certainly has its moments of beauty and moments of horror.

I appreciate what the writer does in this book. However, it's not my style. This book is to a conventional novel the way jazz is to conventional rock and roll. I also think that comparison is exactly what the author was aiming for.
