Whichever way you slice it, the day started out bad and plunged into a free fall of awful.

When you get up in the morning, the last thing you expect is to see a murdered guy hanging outside your window. Things like that tend to draw the attention of the local police, and when you’re squatting in your parents’ old house until you can afford to buy it, another thing you can’t afford is the attention of the cops.

Oh yeah. Hi. My name is Pet.

It’s not my real name, but it’s the only one you’re getting. Things like names are important these days. And it’s not so much that I’m Pet. I’m a pet.

A human pet: I belong to the two Behindkind fae and the pouty vampire who just moved into my house. It’s not weird, I promise—well, it’s weird, yeah. But it’s not weird weird, you know?

I wondered if this was what it would have been like to have an older brother; reasonable and kind of murderous.

Considering the high rating, and the mention of vampires and fae, I had high hopes for this one. But honestly, the reason I stopped reading it is because...I can't bring myself to care. Despite a murder kicking this off, there isn't any tension in trying to find the murderer because it didn't involve Pet, so why would Pet care?

That's what the fae and vampire are investigating...except they don't particularly strike me as very vampire- or fae-like. But there's no stakes mentioned on why they need to investigate. And their presence heralds the arrival of weird things...like mini scarecrows with hands coming out of walls.

But even that doesn't scare Pet. Nope, she kicks the guy's sword back to him without him being the wiser and goes back to her waitress job.

They finally discover she's camping in her house that they took over...except that doesn't really mean much either. The only thing that's remotely interesting is the fact that she's apparently a weird sort of null that dampens a vampire's sense of smell and she can obtain a dryad that's alluded to being a huge thing except she just took it off a shelf.

But even then...why do I care? DNF @44%.

I don't see what everyone sees in this one. Is it just me?
