This is the second book I've read by Nicola Skinner, and I have to say that she is incredibly skilled at writing books which aren't quite like anything I've read before. I felt that way with Bloom and now again with Starboard. The two books felt unpredictable and different, both to other books and to each other.
It took me a little while to get into Starboard, but once the magical part really took off, I was gripped. This is partially an adventure story, but its focus is the characters - not only the two human children, but the ship and all the other usually inanimate objects brought to life aboard her.
In all honesty Starboard isn't quite my kind of story and won't be a personal favourite, but I'm very glad I read it as it's a fascinating book, and I have no doubt that some people will absolutely love it. I definitely plan to read more by this author, and hope that she can continue to surprise me.
