The Hardest Fall by Ella Maise
lighthearted
slow-paced
4.0
OMG swoon 🥴 Dylan and Zoe becoming friends and falling for each other was delightful. This book knew what it was and didn't try to be anything different. And it worked.
Dylan just sounds like a solid dude. I'd be friends with him. The wounded and broken heroes have their time and place, but so do the heroes without a massive flaw or baggage. That's Dylan. It wasn't hard to root for him.
Sometimes characters like Zoe can really annoy me, but Ella Maise found just the right balance and I ended up liking her too.
There were some not so cheery parts of the story for sure (TW:mention of rape of a supporting character ), and the whole Mark-Zoe storyline. I also found the scene where Dylan and then the whole team came together to show their love for JP really moving... even got choked up some, which I did not expect.
The end does get wrapped up kinda quickly and at a different pace than the rest of the book, but it was honestly all what I was expecting at that point so it felt fine. There was nothing surprising about this book (except maybe the aforementioned TW plot point), and that made the story work. You get what you expect and it was a good time.
