Of Curses and Kisses by Sandhya Menon

4.0

'Of curses and kisses' was one of my most anticipated reads of the year, there were other books I wanted to read more because I knew the authors well, this one was because of it's sinopsis.
At first I wasn't sure if this was fantasy, or contemporary, or a mix of both. From what I read, I think this is practically contemporary with a little hint of fantasy.

I've read Sandhya Menon before. I read 'When Dimple Met Rishy' and I found it a little too romantic, and I found that, in this book, the authors brings us a little of that again.

I liked this book. These two characters that were supposed to have grown up in a similar manner due to their families, who were supposed to be born hatting each other because of an old fiud between their ancessors. All things that influenced opinions before they could see for themselves.

SpoilerI liked that Grey was completely honest. He wasn't prejudiced like Jaya because of his family, because, as it turns out, his family didn't even care about him. His father simply blamed everything on a kid for things that were out of his control. A boy who grew up in a Shell when he didn't have to. And Jaya, a princess filled with so much duty, with lies and the sole goal to protect her sister, of course she was out to get whoever was trying to stain her family's name.

I liked how it wasn't long until Jaya understood that Grey wasn't involved in all the things she thought. They both saw each other for who they really were. I liked the friend group and how, thankfully, Catarina wasn't the person to ruin things, and she and Jaya ended up being friends.

This story is very farytale romantic. Although I liked the story, I felt like the ending was too easy. When all the rubys fell, all it meant was that Grey was going to quit being an Emerson? I thought he was going to turn into something, or was about to die and Jaya had to do something to stop it. I mean, it was a cute ending, but I fel like it wasn't the best choice. But it does scream Sandhya Menon, at least from what I remembre Reading from her previous book.

All in all it was a gripping story, and perfect for people that love retellings that are very romantic. And this is kind of a Beauty and the beast, Romeo and Juliet kind of retelling, so what is more romantic that that?
Four stars.
