Short Soup by Coleen Kwan

4.0

This is pretty much a five star read, but I was somewhat shook up by the abrupt ending fast forwarding so soon, so that was my only quibble, really.

I'm not normally one for the friends-to-lovers trope but this clicked with me. There is chemistry in spades between Toni and Dion, and whereas sometimes you don't see a romantic relationship working with some pairings in the long term, this made me go "this makes sense!". I loved how Dion declared his love for Toni unequivocally and naturally. He seems a real keeper! And the sexy times--phew! I am not looking at White Rabbit sweets the same way ever again.

Now I frequently lament the lack of ethnic protagonists in contemporary romance (or any genre really) and this ticked all my boxes. Kwan understands the nuances of Chinese and Australian culture and it shows in her characters, whom I loved for all their familiarity. Mahjong! Exceeding parent expectations! FOOD! (That said, Toni and Dion's parents are SO understanding compared to other Chinese parents.)

I NEED MORE OF THESE STORIES. NOW. And I feel like a bowl of short soup for lunch.
