The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston

5.0

I have been wanting to read this one for awhile now and I finally got my hands on the audiobook from the library. A book about authors/publishing relationships? Love. A book where a character has a special magical/supernatural gift? Love. A book where there's complex family and/or relationship dynamics? Yes, please. A book that grapples with death and grief? Sign me up. The author's ability to do so in a way that is both heavy and light? Even better!

And somehow Poston is able to do so while intertwining a ghost story, clever puns, and gallows humor in the midst of it all. Her writing style was just... *chef's kiss* I don't know how she was able to write a book that was everything I hoped it to be and so much more, but she did. This book felt both LitFic and RomCom to me. It had some of the classic elements you would expect from both and yet she was still able to add some fun twists and surprises in to make it not what you would expect, and thank god! Because I thought we were gonna get some Meg Cabot Mediator sort of situation happening by the end! Poston danced that line beautifully but then veered into While You Were Sleeping territory. IYKYK.

This book was so delightful and I consumed it in the course of a day and a very stressful day it was, so I was very thankful for the chuckles and gasps and the overall joy that this book brought to my world for such a time as that. This is another one that needs to live on my selves ASAP!
