The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston
5.0
If I could have rated this book 6 stars (out of 5) I would have. This became my favorite read this year (and perhaps in the last two years too)
I ordered this book because of bookstagram friend of mine posted a review and with the way she described it, I knew I wanted to read it, even though I am literally terrified of a sad ending.
This book deals with loss most of all, how it can define us but also heal us in a way.
I love how many cultural references the author squeezes in there. AND FOR ONCE, I think I got them all. From the books and other authors to the songs and bands. It was so refreshing to see this book set in a real ‘world’. I feel like in some book, authors try to not talk about cultural references, perhaps to make the book more interdimensional (is it the right word in english ? I have no idea)
Also, I didn’t know what a ghostwriter was and I’m glad to know more about all these details in an author's world.
Be careful, spoilers underneath !
I don’t know why but I knew Ben was in a coma (probably when he told Florence about the voices he heard and how he couldn’t remember where he went when he wasn’t around). Even though I really doubted myself in the hospital scene. I was so hopeful he would find her and when he didn’t I actually lost faith.
I swear, it’s been a really long time since I cried that much reading a book.
And last of all, if you’re like me, and don’t like a book to be too emotional or don’t like when a book wrecks you, but you can stomach it if the ending is somewhat a tiny bit happy, then you should read it. You’re going to cry and maybe you’re going to think everything will have a bad ending but keep going. This book is worth it.
