The Darkest Passion by Gena Showalter
1.0
I'm only half-way through this book, but honestly I can't stand Olivia. We're constantly told she's selfless, angelic, and sweet, yet always shown she's actually selfish, manipulative, and sometimes even malicious. I get that she's supposed to be "fallen" but honestly she just comes off as despicable. Plus if Showalter is going to be pushing the corruption of an angel angle, it wouldn't make sense to keep pushing the "angelic" image or have her be so awful from the start.
Additionally, there is no romantic tension between the leads AT ALL. I mean, there is shit tons of lust, but I'm half way through and there is still NO romantic build up or development. I can't see them together at this point at all and am just skimming through the story beats where they are together. I just don't care.
Honestly, I wish Showalter had written this about Aeron and Legion instead. They actually have ANY kind of relationship and it would have been more interesting since Legion (at the least) is a consistent character that shows feelings for Aeron past blind and stupid lust.
EDIT: Finished. This book was like a placeholder between Lysander's novella and Gideon's book.
Turns out Aeron's characterization is flip-floppy and has nothing to do with the characterization from the previous novel. He's also just as self-absorbed as Olivia so I guess they deserve each other.
The biggest tragedy of this book is Legion's arc, though. She deserved so much better than what she got. It really is a travesty.
