L'ami retrouvé by Fred Uhlman

5.0

This little novella has been on my radar for years, and it did not disappoint. Despite the looming backdrop of the rise of Hitler in Germany and the conflicts between Jews and Nazis, this book is essentially a book about friendship. It is hopeful without being naïve, focusing entirely on the friendship that develops between two teenagers. When the political situation inevitably begins to intrude, the results are everything you expected... and completely different.

Overall, one of the best things I read this year.

** note: I read this in French, thinking that it had originally been published in French - but the original was apparently in English. I'm not sure how the translation holds up to the original, but I found the French version very good.
