I really enjoyed this more than I thought. It took me about 50 pages to get invested and then I didn’t want to put it down. I do feel very confused on the fantasy element, but I think I might just need to go back and reread some parts or hope that book 2 explains more. I didn’t feel like there was enough background to help me understand the gods at war, but it also could be my inability to wrap my head around fantasy worlds.
I really loved the characters in this story, the writing style, the use of letters, and the pacing was well done. This didn’t feel like a YA book(mainly because of how well written it was compared to most YA), and with the one open door scene I found myself double checking that it wasn’t categorized as adult. Overall, I enjoyed this way more than I expected and am eager to read book 2!
