Born in Fire by Nora Roberts

2.0

Didn't know whether to rate this 2 or 3 stars, but settled with 2 because I did skim quite some pages instead of thoroughly reading them.

This was my first time reading Nora Roberts, and I'm afraid it may be the last time as well. I had high expectations- seeing all the positive reviews and high ratings- but I couldn't have been more disappointed.

The main thing that threw me off was the writing style. It's written in 3rd person, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the way this was written made it seem like you were watching from a distance. I didn't engage with the characters, couldn't empathize with them despite the struggles they went through, and the romances didn't feel quite right.

I did like the whole art setting, and the fact that Maggie practices such an intriguing form of art. However Maggie herself was quite annoying and rude to me, opposed to it being a charming trait she just seemed like a brat most of the time. The rest of the characters were decent enough, though nothing special.

Would I recommend this book? I'm sure if you love the writing it would be an easy 4 or 5 star book, but it just wasn't for me. I'd say just try it out and see whether it's for you!
