The Girl Who Escaped from Auschwitz by Ellie Midwood
2.0
I generally like historical fiction, but something about this book wasn’t doing it for me. I couldn’t get invested in any of the characters and felt like the juxtaposition between the horrors of the holocaust snd love story was almost romanticizing the holocaust. It was a very average book and could’ve been worse.
Favorite quotes:
“So we destroy all that hatred and replace it with love. So that in place of battlefields, we plant trees and flowers and crops. So in place of any army marches, we will all listen to this”
“A girl, who is tied to a chair, no less. Tell me this: does it make you feel more like a man when you hit a woman? Do you feel strong and powerful when you strike someone who can’t strike back? Do you feel proud of yourself? Do you go home to your wife and boast to her how big of a man you are after spent your day slapping about a girl tied to a chair? Or do you hit her too, just to reach her who’s in charge of the house?”
“A grotesque parade of the dead and soon-to-be dead, marching through the gates to the cheerful sounds of the camp orchestra”
