was this better the second time around? yes.
but was ur overall still pretty bad? also yes.

ᝰ writing ⊹.˚
i’d go as far as to say that the writing is this books biggest flaw. i don’t know who edited this, or if it even had an editor because the amount of mistakes i saw was insane. not only that, but also the writing alone is terrible. the language used doesn’t suit a fantasy book at all, and overall the book reads very juvenile. it’s an adult book that reads YA with extremely cringy (Wattpad style) dialogue.

ᝰ world-building ⊹.˚
i don’t really know what to say here.
for a good portion of the book i didn’t understand the world at all. there’s supposed to be a huge war going on, yet there are no politics and the reason for the war is never really explained well.
on top of that, there was a LOT of info dumping. Violet just loves to say random stuff about the world in hopes that we somehow understand what she’s saying.

ᝰ plot ⊹.˚
even though both the writing and the world building were shit i was still pretty invested in what was happening. this book really draws you in immediately.
the first and last 20-30% were entertaining but i must admit, the middle chunk was kind of boring. it just felt like all the characters were doing was having conversations or training which didn’t really end up adding anything to the story.

ᝰ characters ⊹.˚
⭒ Violet, i still don’t know how to feel about her. i absolutely hated her in the beginning and she annoyed the shit out of me, but in the end she wasn’t that bad. i liked how her confidence grew and how she was unapologetically herself despite everything that happened.

⭒ Xaden, he is your typical cookie cutter tall, brooding, tattooed, shadow wielding MMC. the only thing he has going for him is that he isn’t as toxic as some of BookTok’s favorite shitty book boyfriends. in the end i thought he was fine. he’s nothing special.

⭒ The Dragons, them, Rhiannon, and Ridoc were favorite characters in this book. i loved how funny and sarcastic they were. their dialogue was the only one where i didn’t cringe. the dragons backs really must hurt from carrying this book.

ᝰ tropes ⊹.˚
⭒ 1st person POV
⭒ war college
⭒ deadly challenges
⭒ insta-lust
⭒ forced proximity
⭒ found family
⭒ disability representation
⤷ spice level: 🌶️🌶️

ᝰ final thoughts ⊹.˚
if this book had better writing and way less cringy romance then maybe it would’ve even been good in my opinion.
BookTok loves to hype up the most mid books, doesn't it…

*i bought this series second-hand as i was really curious what the hype was all about.*
