Even though the main plot of the book was interesting, the story was more romance heavy than I was expecting and it followed a relatively predictable storyline, at least in this first book so far. The romance aspect became pretty frustrating when it took precedence over the main plot and made the overall pace of the book feel a lot slower to read despite various time skips, but I digress. With all the hype this book series has been getting, my expectations were high but overall the book was just okay personally.

Personally, I found the romance between Violet and Xaden became more cringey and irritating as the story progressed. Whether it's due to the first person view where we can only see Violet's thoughts or the behavior of Violet once she realizes she likes Xaden and wants to pursue a relationship with him, it made the reading experience worse for me. I wish they had more of a slow-burn love story since it would've allowed more time for the author to address the interesting secrets Violet's father kept while making their relationship seem less rushed. Also, disappointed Dain wasn't more of a supportive best friend character and instead was used as a possible love interest who was jealous. Not every childhood friend needs to have a love line with the main character, they can simply just be a great friend that stayed throughout the years.
