Fushigi Yûgi: Genbu Kaiden, Vol. 3 by Yuu Watase

4.0

The further along I get in this series, the more I'm convinced it's far superior to the original. Granted, it's written a prequel story written years after the original was completed, so there's obviously room for growth and improvement in Watase's craft as a writer. But I do genuinely think that this is the far better story, and I absolutely enjoy it more than I ever did the original. (Of course, I have never been able to completely shuck my hatred for Miaka and Tamahome as characters, and I can be an adult enough to admit that. There's probably also something to be said for the fact that Watase herself equated Tamahome to a dog and Limdo to a cat, so there's that strike against Tamahome in my books as well. And Limdo is growing on me.)
