Foster by Claire Keegan

4.0

A beautifully crafted novella set in southeastern Ireland in the early 1980s. A young girl is sent to live with distant relatives during the long, hot summer when her overworked mother is waiting to give birth to yet another child. In the care of the Kinsellas, the girl blossoms—though all summers must end. Claire Keegan's writing is spare yet evocative, deftly conjuring up the rural Ireland of my childhood. I could hear the characters so clearly as they spoke. Foster is both a heartwarming and a heart-bruising read.Â
