The Dream Thieves, by Maggie Stiefvater

4.0

Read via NetGalley.

I can only add to the universal love for this. It's really satisfying to read a follow-up novel that hits the ground running and doesn't spend endless paragraphs re-hashing events from its precursor; that actually has terrific character development and fun banter and acute observations and expands upon the plot in a believable and exciting way. You can tell that the author has a lot of love for these characters of hers; even the ones that should be hateful aren't, just aren't. Everyone has their place and role. Look, I even liked Kavinsky, okay? (see you on the streets)
SpoilerThe homoerotic element totally took me by surprise and I liked it a lot; I liked it because I didn't see it coming and because it made sense and was subtle but sexy. And strangely, the scene that has really stayed with me was Gansey and Adam's visit to the home of Gansey's parents; I thought that was really well done. It could have very easily been boring but I felt that it showed those two - plus the peripheral characters - in a very interesting light. And another small detail that really tickled me was Noah's predilection for re-enacting his own death: endearing and creepy.
Excited (but scared) for book three.

A note on the ebook formatting: it was kinda funky, with run-on paragraphs (particularly dialogue) and incorrect page breaks and breaks at the start of each chapter, as if to allow for a drop cap.
