Never Mind by Edward St Aubyn

4.0

I don't feel you can read this book purely as a stand alone novel. It is a preface to the story of Patrick Melrose, so for that reason I feel that this book feels incomplete, which may deter readers if they are not ready to commit to a five volume series. On its own, it doesn't completely work but, knowing I'm going to read the others, I did really like this book. The writing is very straight forward yet beautiful, and St Aubyn clearly knows these characters inside out because they are so vivid and real it's almost disconcerting. It's a great book but it wouldn't work as a stand alone which, for me, is a bit of a detriment.
