The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

3.0

I finished this book relatively quickly, but that does not mean I loved it: I did not.

Whilst I raced to the end, I found this book to be rather hollow; with comments on race and sexuality, as well as love and intimacy, falling well short of profound.

This book was like that pack of biscuits you buy that you could eat a lot of, despite knowing that homemade cookies are better. They're better because they take time, and they are uniquely made, and they're more than just the cookie. I could indulge in this book because it was shiny, exciting, fast-paced and easy to read, but it just wasn't that fulfilling.

I never usually write harsh reviews, but people are raving about how diverse the characters are, and quoting some parts of as though the words are so meaningful... and I simply can't agree - there are swooping statements and rushed elements of this book that are meant to convince you otherwise.

An attractive story that does what it says on the tin.
