Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness
3.0
At first, I expected something worse. The first book wasn’t THAT good, but wasn’t bad either. And since that cliché ending, I thought this book would be predictable from bottom to top. But, surprisingly, it wasn’t.
Still, I don’t like the idea of Matthew knowing every important person in 16th century. Elizabeth the 1st, okay, I can deal with that. With Elizabeth there’s Cecil, which is acceptable. But knowing Christopher Marlowe? Not buying it, not really. Marlowe is also a demon and really crappy one, if you ask me. Then there is this matter called William Shakespeare. Who are you, Harkness, that you can write shitload of stuff about Will? Do you know him personally or you have proof that he wasn’t a writer but just some douchebag who stole ideas and works from other people? No, you don’t. So, please, shut your mouth about him.
I don’t know what happened, but Diana in this story was less irritating than in the first book. She was kind of more mature (like, da, she is 33, it’s about time). Matthew was also more likeable.
In some way, the second book was a bit better than the first. I still won’t give it more than 3 stars, but it is improvement from 2,7 to 3,5.
Will I read the next book? Maybe. I’m not convinced yet.
