Her Vampire Hero, by Nicolina Martin

3.0

I really enjoyed Her Vampire Hero. It's a very steamy, NSFW story with a slight dub-con feel but not overly dark. Both main characters were immensely likeable, I wasn't always 100% convinced by Kat's decisions but then it would have been a completely different book if she hadn't made some of them! I hasten to add that it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story in any way, shape or form.

The interactions between Kat and Lou were amazing, they definitely had scorching hot chemistry. Whilst insta-love isn't a favourite trope of mine the author did do an excellent job of convincing me of the attraction between this pair and the situation didn't feel forced. In fact, the writing as a whole is of a high standard, and the story is eminently engaging.

I did feel the story occasionally lacked some background. Why was the 'King of Louisiana' so obsessed with destroying Lou? What was Lou's vampire background? Why did Lucian and Selene take to him so quickly? It felt as though some (minor) details were glossed over - possibly they occur in other books in the series, I haven't read them so wouldn't know. Since none of it was majorly important to the plot, again it didn't spoil my enjoyment.

For me personally, the last few chapters did feel a little abrupt. It would be wrong to say there weren't any clues as to how the story would evolve, but it was the way the focus/feel of the story changed so swiftly that made it just feel a little dissonant. It went from 'here we have a captive semi-consensual BDSM D/s relationship' to it suddenly being something else (I won't say what because..... spoilers). Whilst I still liked what I was reading it did leave me feeling slightly perturbed, a little thrown out of the story and for that reason it did lose half a star.

I would recommend this for those who enjoy well-written paranormal romances. The kink isn't too pervasive but the heat level in this one is scorching - you have been warned!
