I bought this book because it was the edition my Grandma owned when I was little and I remembered that I loved Helen Stratton's illustrations and was fascinated by the original story of The Little Mermaid. Even though the stories have been adapted, they were not heavily abridged and stayed true to the original stories - the only major difference I could find being that the language was slightly simplified for children. I thought it was a good selection of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy stories and the hand colouring of the original illustrations was beautiful and really brought the drawings to life. My favourite stories would be The Little Mermaid, The Garden of Paradise, The Ice Maiden, The Fir Tree and The Wild Swans.
