This is probably going to be one of my favourite reads from 2023. I held off on reading this for so long and dived into so many other mythology retellings while avoiding this one because I was so worried that it would not be as good as everyone said it was. But I was wrong. I devoured this, ate it up and left no crumbs.

I went in as blind as I could have been with this, and did not expect the LGBTQ representation and honestly I'm pleasantly surprised. It was one of the sweetest romances I've ever read, and of course the most heartbreaking. The young, talented prince who knows nothing of failure, nothing of shame meets a peer who has known nothing but the opposite. They felt so natural and right and I don't care if that's not what actually happens in the original poems (I haven't read those yet though I should).

The ending of this book tore at me. The only reason I did not cry was because I was reading on my commute to work and could NOT bawl on my walk to the office. Heartbreaking, bittersweet. It was everything I thought it would be and better.
