The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down: How to be Calm in a Busy World by Haemin Sunim

4.0

3.5 rounded up to 4. I was interested in reading about Buddhism and couldn’t get a hold of the main book I wanted, so I tried this one. It was more relatable than I expected, with short, poignant quotes in each chapter pertaining to rest, mindfulness, passion, relationships, love, life, the future, and spirituality. I particularly liked the “When You Look For Your Calling” chapter.

I thought it was interesting that Sumin, a Seon Buddhist teacher, often referenced Jesus, The Bible, and religious issues. Hopefully these references remind people of all religions that they can learn about/relate to the Buddhist philosophy and that “to know one religion is to know none.”

There are many more ordinary hours in life than extraordinary ones. We wait in line at the supermarket, we spend hours commuting to work, we water our plants and feed our pets. Happiness means finding a moment of joy in those ordinary hours.”

The most frequently asked question is how to deal with strong negative emotions such as anger, hatred, and jealousy. The good news is that those raising this question are already halfway there. The fact that they are asking the question indicated that they are mindful enough to notice the negative state of their own mind, which is not an easy thing to do. Most people are completely absorbed in their emotions and have limited self-awareness.
