Gothikana by RuNyx

I could have DNFed this book very early on due to the absolutely horrific writing and toxic relationship between the two main characters, but I stayed for the mystery (and b/c a friend chose this for our buddy read). Dark romance isn’t really my thing. Scratch that. Toxic relationships for the sake of smut aren’t really my thing. I had to repeatedly remind myself that the two MCs are adults. The writing is so juvenile that I just kept envisioning a teenage girl with a full grown adult man and that gave me the ick. The setting of the school is pretty cool, and the gothic vibes were pretty good, but everything else still felt very YA (which is disturbing because, you know, all the smut). Also, someone get this author an editor. I think the misspellings, poor grammar, and weird choice of words all contributed to the book feeling so immature. It felt like a teenage girl who’s read too much Poe scribbling out her fantasies in her diary after reading a scandalous romance that her mother had hidden away. I don’t know. This author is clearly not for me.
