Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets & Advice for Living Your Best Life by Ali Wong

funny informative inspiring lighthearted reflective medium-paced

4.5

I cried laughing when I first watched Baby Cobra. Ali Wong is beautiful, hilarious, and relatable as a fellow Asian American woman. Although I happen to have a physical copy of this (signed, no less!) that I found at Goodwill five years ago, the audiobook was the way to go as it’s narrated by Ali herself.

This is full of unapologetic and vulgar stories that mention her body parts, bodily functions, and the expulsion of various fluids, so if that offends your sensibilities then you’d better steer clear of both this memoir and her comedy! She has many things to say as a successful woman in comedy that are validating to hear, and she got me thinking about what I want my wedding with my fiance to look like and what I truly find important. A wedding is not a marriage! I really enjoyed hearing about her life and experiences growing up, and sprinkled throughout the raunchy jokes are genuine and honest messages and lessons to her two daughters after which this book is named.

After I finished this I learned she and her husband divorced in 2023. This came out in 2019, so her now ex-husband features in a lot of her stories. I didn’t delve deeper so I don’t know what happened between them, but at least at the time of publishing it sounds like he was a very supportive partner while they were together, and he even wrote/narrated an afterward at the end of the book.

I chuckled listening to this, even though there were some times where the comedy felt a bit forced in book-form. Looking forward to whenever she does her next comedy special!
