Homie: Poems, by Danez Smith

dark emotional funny hopeful reflective sad medium-paced

5.0

This collection of poems made me ugly cry. Danez Smith writes beautifully, devastatingly, lovingly, angrily, and I think everyone should read their works. Every poem tells a story, and then every poem ties into the other poems, creating a network that feels alive as you read it, unfolding a life, a heart, a community, on the page in front of you. Smith writes about Black pride, suicide, gender, racism, queerphobia, family, love, sex, friendship, sexuality, community, illness, loss, trees, God, continents, and millions of other things. Once I had started reading, I could not tear myself away. I cannot recommend this enough: Read Homie by Danez Smith.
