Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

5.0

Who does not love Pride and Prejudice? The mind-games of the Victorian women, each so happily interfering in the others' lives?

Pride and Prejudice holds a special place in my heart, being the first classic I ever read, the first Jane Austen, the first book displaying so much of a woman's perspective, and the first literary-bad-boy crush of my hormonal and lonely school years.

The writing is mostly simple and conveys the point clearly, with a dash of colour. There are plot twists and endless machinations and a heroine with a good dose of backbone. There is a lot of pride and even more prejudice. There are all feelings petty and noble, described so well you can imagine the character and what she/he is feeling almost exactly. The setting is simple, yet so completely portrays these small lives and their big concerns. You almost wish you were there, as one of them, seeing and feeling all these things.

Very few books come close to creating the everyday magic in Jane Austen's books, and most especially Pride and Prejudice.
