Reread a book that was required reading in my high school English class, and it’s a complicated one. I do like the writing style and the pacing, and the book’s stance on immigration is refreshing for a book from the 80’s.

That said. Slurs are used pretty liberally, and the central plot is a traumatized Native child being given to a white woman and taken across state lines, completely removed from any tribal connection and being given falsified documents. I know why I liked it more than Catcher in the Rye, but I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone.
