Mr. Spencer by TL Swan

2.0

I needed something easy but engaging to read to get me over the mother of all reading slumps and thought that a good romance would be the perfect resolution. I did enjoy Mr.Spencer, but i did verge on cheesy and a bit twee at times. At some points I was not necessarily cringing but I was certainly on the verge.

There was a lot of 'giggling' which kept the image of Charlotte as this young girl rather than a woman, and every time she 'giggled' I just kept picturing her as a pig-tailed teenager. I also found her family not just suffocating, but almost entirely unbearable. So, we were supposed to dislike their treatment of Charlotte, but to ultimately want them to be reconciled, but I didn't want that, because they were all massive dicks.

I did like Mr. Spencer, he was charming, honest and loyal and he was well-written in this book. Far better written than what Charlotte was, and so I didn't quite feel like she deserved him. Still, their romance was genuine and developed naturally, though I grew bored once we started reading 'I love you' 'No, I love YOU' over and over. In fact, I think I preferred the writing when they were going through their 'obstacle'. For shame, I actually didn't foresee that being the obstacle. That felt far more grown up and emotional.

Overall, Mr. Spencer did the trick and got me back into reading, but I'm not sure that it would be the top of my recommendation list.
