I absolutely adores Gibson’s collection of poetry. Their writing style is a mesh of love poem and political commentary and it is beautiful to read. In their poem “1988”, Gibson says “people who have been through hell / will build their love from the still burning coals” which speaks very nicely to the tone of the collection. The poems touch on many social topics, ranging from gender to race to relation building. For being so diverse in the topic choice though, every poem still ties together very nicely with underlying tones of perseverance and acceptance. I highly recommend this poetry collection.

P.S. Gibson has recordings of many of the poems on Spotify so I also recommend listening to those as you read so you can really hear their voice as you read. It’s a really cool experience to read and hear the poems at the same time.
