The promising backdrop of an interpreter beginning their role at The Hague (International Criminal Court) was largely skimmed over in favour of a far less compelling story.
.
For a book about translation, I maybe should have expected to labour over paragraphs and unearth deeper meaning but due to the overall disconnection I felt from the story and characters, the choice to engage further felt futile.
.
It felt hollow and left me frustrated. Anyone who read this book and felt obliged to consider humanity’s deprivation and addiction to power is outing themselves from their ivory tower, far removed from the events unfolding before us every day.
