"And besides, you and I both know... You should always keep your enemies close."

Well this volume felt a bit darker than the others! Both with unresolved family problems with Musa and Sam and a widerscale tension in politics and religion with Aria, Miriam and council keeping track of the rare bird population which poses a threat with their long dead diety. This volume also had a lot more info about how this alternate historical fantasy is set both in the narrative and the extra info at the back! I definitely found myself drown to the rasuls - messengers for respective dieties, which are essentially jinns from Islamic mysticism and have animal features like Emira! So this makes sense for characters like Sam and Zach who had animals mentioned in the firsr volume.

Before I go off topic, back to the book itself! I'm very wary of Aria.... they seem incesdibly shadey, especially with Miriam at the end. Also can't trust Emira anymore. I adore this little trio though, Musa, Sam and Zach have my heart (and so does Zhen!). I totally relate to Musa being unable to reconcile with his parents, the being unable to understand how any of their actions can be deemed "okay". Also feel bad for Sam, Musa is right she needs to talk it out but I'm glad she left them and made a happier life for herself. I really want to find out more about this bird folk that everyone seems to shun? I mean even Zach keeps quiet about it all, they don't even have the privilege of a holy family and representative like the other dieties/factions! I'm also scared Emira is going to push Zhen into the public view! Speaking of Zhen, him and Zach are adorable... imagine how cute they'd be if they weren't long distance :(.

LASTLY- the art work seems so EXTRA this time round, like so much prettier and detailed and expansive!
