I Hear the Sunspot by Yuki Fumino

5.0

I would say this is the one manga that I've read that has had any sort of rep that isn't differing socioeconomic classes. While that rep is important too, having hearing disability rep truly allows for readers to learn about the condition and become more educated on it.

There were a few poignant parts in the manga that really make you stop and think about how people with hearing disabilities are treated. This is a case where there was an incident when he was in middle school and he became hard of hearing as a result. We get to see his reaction to losing his hearing and becoming diagnosed which isn't really shown a lot in the manga genre. There was a stark contrast in how people treated him and how he wished to be treated and most of it was because of people's ignorance in the disability.

Another thing I liked was the characters. While we truly only got to know two characters, trying to have any more characters with actual depth would've been too much for how short this manga was. We get to know Kohei, who we soon learn is hard of hearing. The story revolves around his struggles and basically how stupid people are, which is actually great. Our second main character is Taichi. I wished we got to know more about him as the manga focused on Kohei and his life, but there are some things that Taichi reveals that show that he has had his own struggles growing up, including being bullied, so he knows somewhat how Kohei feels some of the time.

Honestly, if you're looking for a cute quick manga that has great hearing disability rep and has a good story, then this is something you should definitely pick up. Really good!!
